In the dead of night, after a torrential downpour of public criticism and humiliation, Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris was forced to ask Governor General H.E. Tapley Seaton to revoke the appointment of St. Lucian-born Franklyn Maitland as a member of the Integrity Commission which was appointed only earlier this week. The public outcry was a backlash against the stifling corruption in the Team Unity government led by Dr. Harris where Ministers of Government and their families members are abusing their authority and filling their pockets with taxpayers’ money on a daily basis.
It was pointed out that Maitland was disqualified by law from being a member of the Integrity Commission on the following grounds:
- He is a member of the Board of Directors of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank, which is a majority state-owned company
- He has been an executive member of the People’s Labour Party
- Neither he nor any of his parents was born in St. Kitts and Nevis (this is required by virtue of the Constitution)
- He is the personal accountant and business partner of Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris and his brothers Len Harris and Dwight Harris.
The stench of this corruption was so unbearable that Harris buckled under public pressure and pulled the plug on Maitland.
Maitland has now been replaced by Mr. Dennis ‘Freddie’ Knight who is a member of the Billy Herbert clan. Like Maitland, Freddie Knight is also disqualified for the fact that he is an employee of the government of St. Kitts and Nevis. Mr Knight is an employee of the Solid Waste Management Corporation.
So, the logical conclusion is that the government does not intend to properly and legitimately operationalize the Integrity in Public Life Act which was passed by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party administration. It is crystal clear that any action taken by the Integrity Commission will be fraught with legal problems because the Commission has at least one member who is disqualified. It is also speculated that the Commission Chairman, Damian Kelsick, is also not qualified.
