Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has made an official statement against comments he deemed to be untruths made by authorities of the ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation, alleging that the Labour Party was offered access to use the state-owned platform like another body.
Following yesterday’s monthly press conference, July 25th, held by the Labour Party, Dr. Douglas stated that he will not allow the body and its political appointees to spread lies and get away with it.
Briefly, Dr. Douglas stated that for years, the Labour Party has been writing to ZIZ requesting permission to utilise their broadcasting services via television and radio, to which, the requests were denied.
The Opposition Leader suggested that the matter is being guided by the Prime Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris, who is determined to stifle the Opposition and the Labour Party.
*Dr. Douglas’ Statement*
“Let me make it abundantly clear, several months ago we wrote, in my capacity as the Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, to ZIZ seeking permission to use its facilities. We got a response which led to a meeting that was held in the office of the Leader of the Opposition by myself as the leader, the then Chairman of the Party Hon. Marcella Liburd, the Chairman of the Board of ZIZ and the manager acting Mr. Vere Galloway.
“Basically, in that meeting, the guys threw up their hands saying that they don’t know what else they can do, they can go no further in the matter with the request that we have made, as the matter now has to be dealt with by the minister responsible.
“I was very shocked when the news item said that they [ZIZ] responded to our request in writing and submitted with the letter a rate sheet which regards to the cost in using the facilitates; that is not true. We received no written response with any rate sheet attached. That is either a blatant lie or it is fake news.”
