The actions of Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris continue to threaten and devalue the human rights of locals and residents in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. This is according to the 2017 Human Rights Report recently published by the United States Department of State.
The report spoke to a great sense of fear amongst the people, as a result of the actions and implemented policies and practices of the Timothy Harris regime.
Mentions of corruption were also made in the report, noting that not only the rights of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis are being evaded, but also that the government constantly goes against protocol.
Commenting on the issue on national radio, St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party representative, Dr Terrance Drew said the report is a damning one for the PAM/CCM/PLP government.
“This is why they are going around talking about things that aren’t important, trying to distract the public from what was in the report.”
In supporting the findings of the report, Dr. Drew, the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s Caretaker for constituency number eight said, “The Prime Minister (Timothy Harris), week after week continues to make blatant statements against people’s human rights.”
He noted that Dr Timothy Harris has a habit of threatening persons to support him and ordering that they don’t support or listen to any other.
“That is against people’s human rights! It is a constitutional right; you have the right to associate with who you want and assemble with who you want!”
Dr Drew pointed out that Dr Harris’ behaviour is very similar to that of the colonizers in the days of slavery.
“It was under the colonisation, where the colonial masters did not want the poor people of our country to associate and make sure they had the power to uplift themselves, they put these laws in place. Now, many years later, a prime minister from our soil, a black man, is telling our people who they should follow and not follow.”
“We cannot take these things lightly!”
